Local Artists Honoured at FANS Event - by Peggy Stortz
Every year as autumn approaches, many folks... start to think about
the FANS Award night. This annual event is the main fundraiser for the
Fund for the Arts on the North Shore. It also provides an opportunity to showcase some of the talented artists in the community and to publicly honour North Shore artists who have achieved international recognition. In addition, the Don S.
Williams Award is given to North Shore artists to assist them in their chosen career.
This year AUGUST is a co-recipient of this award.
The members of the singing group AUGUST are on a roll. With plenty of gigs behind them and bookings ahead into 2009, their hear-warming and uplifting musical style is creating a positive buzz on the local music scene and beyond. And this is only the beginning for them as they have been invited to the Ontario Contact music showcase this October where they will meet with industry people from Eastern Canada and the United States.
But these women are no new to the music world by any means. Linda Kidder, Beverley Elliott, Rae Armour, and Meg Tennant are all singer-songwriters with successful performing and recording careers under their belts. Sitting around one afternoon though, they decided to put their collective talents together and the result is a heavenly blend of soul, folk, country, blue grass and pop. Their voices weave a sound tapestry of beautiful four-part harmonies.
As all four women are songwriters, their repertoire includes songs from each one of them. The lyrics address social issues, the ups and downs of a woman's life, the sheer magic of being alive. There's plenty of with and wisdom as well as a generous does of hilarity. Where they go, they wreak joy, inspiration and comedic havoc. To listen to them is truly a powerful musical experience.
"We are so very grateful to be honored as co-recipients of the Don S. Williams award" says Rae Armour. "In fact, we're ecstatic! It absolutely reaffirms that it is never too late to live your dreams. We thatnk the North Vancouver Office of Cultural Affairs for their commitment to furthering artistic expression in our community."
AUGUST is releasing their first CD entitled The Sweetest Day this fall. To find
